Abstract

"The Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimmage is an interdisciplinary reference work, giving wide coverage of the role of travel in medieval religious life. Dealing with the period 300-1500 A.D., it offers both basic data on as broad a range of European pilgrimage as possible and clearly written, self-contained introductions to the general questions of pilgrimage research." "Despite widespread modern interest in medieval pilgrimage and related issues, no comprehensive work of this type exists and it will be of interest to scholars and students for personal and academic use. Local sites of pilgrimage are represented in this work as well as the main routes to Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago. Written and material sources relating to pilgrimage are used to illustrate aspects of medieval society, from book production and the trade in relics, to the development of the towns, art, architecture and literature which pilgrimage engendered. The Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage will serve as the main starting point for any serious study of this phenomenon. The Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage is published in English in one illustrated volume of 550,000 words in 435 signed entries, and is compiled and written by over 180 contributors from Europe and North America. Entries are presented alphabetically under headwords, with cross-references, maps, black-and-white illustrations, an editorial introduction and lists of themes and keywords."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract

This book explores how the books of Amos, Hosea and Isaiah use language of creation. This is done by a religion of history approach of ancient Israel with respect to its belief in YHWH as a Creator, and by an exegetical survey of the relevant texts in the prophets mentioned. It is established that creation language was introduced in Israel long before the Exile and is used in a flexible manner, depending on context and situation. Elaborate attention is given to its use in contexts of judgement. This study is relevant for students of the prophets who are looking for a thorough discussion of many texts and a critical examination of some popular views on creation in the Bible.

Abstract

In this volume the presupposition is investigated whether women in a polytheistic society had a better position than women in a monotheistic society. To this end the social and religious position of women in Ugarit according to its literary texts is compared to that of women in Israel according to the Hebrew Bible, while the wider context of the ancient Near East is also taken into consideration. After an overview of feminist biblical exegesis, the book discusses the roles of women in the family and in society. It also provides an analysis of the roles of women as religious specialists and as worshippers. Finally, the data on the position of women in the literary texts is compared to that in non-literary texts.

Abstract

In their recent book The Silent God , Marjo Korpel and Johannes de Moor presented a provocative view on the concept of divine silence in ancient Israel. In their view, divine silence can be explained as an answer to a variety of circumstances. Additionally, they opt for the view that divine silence needs to be answered by appropriate human conduct. The essays in this volume applaud and challenge their views from different perspectives: exegetical, ancient Near Eastern, semantic, philosophical et cetera Some authors hint at the view that divine silence should be construed as an indication of divine absence. Korpel and De Moor give a learned response to their critics. Contributors include: Bob Becking, Joel Burnett, Meindert Dijkstra, Walter Dietrich, Matthijs de Jong, Paul Sanders, Marcel Sarot, Anne-Mareike Wetter, Marjo Korpel and Johannes C. de Moor.
